Geodesic physical model: casting

Updated: May 23, 2020

The final modules to do were to test and demonstrate the casting on formwork process.

For this, I used a card formwork/mould, built from a laser-cut net like the previous mould. I blocked off some of the faces at one end so as to leave an opening. Next, I applied a layer of vaseline to the areas that I was wanting to cast onto, so that the mould would release more easily once the casting material was dry.

Once these steps were complete, it was ready for casting. I used fine casting plaster as well as some modroc. For the first layer, I used just plaster, applying it with my fingers and making sure to get full coverage. The idea was that this would pick up the most detail of the mould, and give me the crisp lines between the faces. At first, the plaster ran straight off but as it started to cure and become thicker, it held. After this, I applied a layer of modroc, to give it greater structural rigidity. Finally, I added another layer of plaster, to leave a relatively smooth external finish.

Casting process: card mould with vaseline applied; layers of plaster and modroc applied; releasing the mould; mould and cast fully separated
